Spine visual effects workflow
Would anybody mind giving me a basic rundown of the workflow of these really nice looking effects I see from people showing off their work? I'd really like to know how to do this.

Are they actually keyframing this using photoshop? Or is there some other piece of software they're using that specialises in these kind of 2D effects to make things easier? I know that you can keyframe transparency and colour in Spine but this looks decidedly more complicated than that.
It's a mixture of skeletal (for the character) and frame by frame animation (for the effects). Most effects in the first video appear to have 3 frames, they are just showing and hiding different images in the animation. You can animate the images of course, so the effects can scale, squash/stretch, fade in/out, etc. As for how they make such nice effects images, I'm not sure. It could be they just draw it using Photoshop or something like TV Paint, which seems likely since there are only 3 frames for many effects. Maybe some artists will chime in with some ideas.

If you pause at around 0:55 you'll see what I mean, now how have they done that? Do they just draw the frames in parts on photoshop and then import them in and keyframe them bit by bit using transparency? Or is it something else?
How they draw the images is magic to my programmer brain, but once you have the images you attach them to a slot and then key which one is visible. You wouldn't use transparency to control which one is visible, unless you actually want something to fade in/out.

I'm actually taking private art lessons so I know how the art work is done, the static character images and stuff are actually the easy part, what I want to know is how they manage that movement because it looks unbelievably smooth, in fact, almost too smooth for 2D which makes me wonder if they aren't mixing in some kind of other program with unity that specialises in that but maybe I'm just being too cynical.
I wonder if perhaps actually they did the visual effects in flash professional and then imported them into spine, that seems like a possible option.
These examples are pretty smooth indeed. As an artist/animator if I have to create Vfx in spine I use photoshop to draw a few frames. Next I can use photoshops transform/deform tools to make in between frames. Normally this results in a decent frame by frame animation in spine. Alternatively I make 3 or 4 frames and add them in a single slot in spine then I duplicate that slot two to three times and decrease the opacity of each of the copied slots slightly. Now my 3 to 4 frames automatically get in between frames that are slightly less opaque. This results into a smoother looking animation with a slight blurring effect...Hope it makes some sense
